Frequently Asked Questions | Shem Lodge No. 8, Phoenix AZ

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest questions, honest answers.

Freemasonry has gathered a great deal of myth over the centuries. Here is the plain truth about who we are, what we ask, and how to join.

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest fraternities. It is a system of morality that borrows the tools and symbols of the stonemason to teach lessons of character, charity, and brotherhood. In short, it takes good men and gives them the means to become better.

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. Freemasonry is not a religion and is not a substitute for one. We do require that every member profess a sincere belief in a Supreme Being, but we never ask a man to set aside his own faith. Within our walls, men of many traditions meet at one altar in mutual respect.

Who can become a Freemason here?

A man of good character and sincere faith who believes in a Supreme Being, is of lawful age, and seeks both personal growth and a life of service. We look for honesty in a man's dealings and a willingness to serve others.

Do I need to know a Mason to join?

Every candidate must be recommended by a brother in good standing, but you do not need to know one yet. Reach out to us, come to know the brethren, and a recommendation will follow naturally once a member can vouch for your character.

How do I petition?

A brother recommends you; you are informed of the petition fee; you complete and return the petition; the Investigation Committee reviews it; you attend an interview; and upon a favorable result you complete the Service of Three before progressing through the degrees. The full path is laid out on our How to Petition page.

What does membership cost?

The petition fee is $75.00 and the interview fee is $25.00, both non-refundable.

As a new Lodge, we keep fees within reach of worthy men, and twenty percent of every degree fee goes to the Cornerstone Building Fund.

When and where do you meet?

Our regular monthly communication is held on the third Saturday of each month at 11:00 a.m. in Arizona. We also hold a Weekly Evening Briefing by video conference every Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, for planning, instruction, and fellowship.

What is the time commitment?

At minimum, attendance at the monthly communication and a part in the Lodge's monthly community service. Many brethren also join the Wednesday briefing. As with anything worthwhile, the Craft gives back in proportion to what you put in.

What is the Service of Three?

It is a practical demonstration of a candidate's faith and commitment. A new candidate completes three hours of verified community service within three days. Masons coming from other jurisdictions serve according to their degree: three, five, or seven days and hours.

Is Freemasonry secret?

Freemasonry is not a secret society; it is a society with a few private traditions. Our purposes, charities, meeting times, and values are all public. What remains private are certain modes of recognition and the personal experience of the degrees, which are best received rather than read about.

How can I support the Lodge if I do not wish to join?

You are most welcome to give to the Cornerstone Building Fund and have your name placed permanently on the Founders' Wall. Friends of the Lodge may also be recognized through Honorary Membership, a token of gratitude that grants no internal Masonic rights. Visit our Donate page to lay a stone.
